Darwinism as religion

It's ironic that some advocates of evolutionary theory, and some "free thinkers"
who subscribe to atheism, become so enamored, so absolutist in their dogma that
their belief in nonbelief becomes a religion in itself. How else are we to
explain their zealous determination to banish the Ten Commandments from our
public squares, or refusal to acknowledge the theory of intelligent design?
Their allegiance to Darwinism, it seems, can become as much a philosophical
conviction as scientific theory. It's been pointed out that Sigmund Freud's
views toward evolution rested not on scientific evidence but personal contempt
toward religion. Then we have the evolutionist Paul R. Gross, professor
emeritus at the University of Virginia, whose March 22 commentary advocating
that "creationism has no place in serious study of science" appeared in
newspapers across the country (including The Forum) in the onset of Holy Week.
One has to believe the author's timing was deliberate, intended to provoke.
