Schools in jeopardy

Evolution is not the only or even the main thing high school students
learn in biology - in fact, it's only one on a checklist of 43 Texas
Essential Knowledge and Skills. But it certainly seems to get the more
attention than the rest of the curriculum outside the classroom.

The National Center for Science Education tracks legislation and
disputes dealing with evolution. So far in 2005, there has been
anti-evolution legislation in Arkansas, battles over disclaimer
stickers in Georgia and protesting teachers in Pennsylvania - and
debate came up in one way or another in six other states.

It's been almost 150 years since Darwin wrote, "Origin of Species,"
and another 80 since the teaching of evolution came up in the famous
trial of Tennessee v. John Scopes - also known as the Scopes Monkey
Trial. But in polls as recent as last year find that the majority of
people still aren't ready to accept evolution whole-heartedly.
