There's been a flurry of media coverage about ID and the teaching of
evolution in Kansas and elsewhere, much of it confusing or inaccurate.
Not surprisingly, a reader, referring to himself as a "simple
biochemist," has asked for a concise definition of intelligent design
(ID). Giving concise but accurate definitions is often difficult. But
here's my shot at a definition of ID, which I think is faithful both to
the nature of the concept, and to the self-understanding of most
proponents of intelligent design:
