Obama on secularists
Barack Obama addresses the question of religion and politics. One can hash this question ad infinitum, but it seems to me that ’secular Darwinists’ have blown their great opportunity to create an appropriate humanism for an age of science. The average effect of religion over history has been a kind of default failsafe. When science proposes to rewrite the legacy of humanism in narrow Darwinian terms the failsafe swings into action. It is just not going to happen that the Dawkins-Dennett ‘brights’ will rewrite human conceptions of religion.
It’s NOT going to happen. Since they are obsessed with trying all we will get is such tings as the sterile ID debate
What is urgently needed is a rethinking (since this is old history, re-thinking is right) of the human/natural sciences relationship, as occurred in the period of the Enlightenment itself. The issue is not religion but a truly viable portrait of man and the nature of action appropriate to a scientific age. This is beyond the capacity of current science, it seems.
We should have been further along by now on these issues, and now, dreadfully, culture is going into reverse gear.
Darwinists should keep in mind that they, noone else, are responsible for their opposition, and should take a good part of the blame for this situation.
