Comment on post challenging Dawkins/Dennett:
Dawkins/Dennett challenged on Enlightenment
Darwin’s theory was challenged almost immediately by a host of people with knowledge of Eastern religions, one of them being Blavatsky. Unfortunately Blavatsky was so extravagant that she discredited herself and her critique.
But there were many many people who knew immediately that a new fiction was being let loose on the public. It seems that Alfred Wallace tuned into this, while Darwin was totally out of it.
There is a very direct critique that rises inevitably when you consider the question of ‘Enlightenment’. There is no way you can really square natural selection with the reality of the complex human potential explored in Buddhism or the many other traditions of consciousness. This issue was brought to the attention of the public very directly (althoug marginalized) in the nineteenth century, but it never registered with the scientific elite which has proceeded on its merry way in complete oblivion. Scientists are completely obtuse on this question, and simply terminate all discussion, slam the shutters closed, and start into their hate mode spewing hatred at New Age kooks. It is actually somewhat alarming since it will end by discrediting science.
Alfred Wallace, we should note, in his own way, realized that something was wrong with Darwin’s theory of natural selection applied to man and said so. Few since have had the courage to do the same.
What a tremendous disservice to students of evolution. The whole game is a coverup.
Note that we need not reject evolution as a fact of nature if we reject the mechanism claimed by Darwin. In fact, we have never fully observed how evolution works, and certainly we know almost nothing about the evolution of consciousness.
