Ruse intones on morality

God is dead. Long live moralityMorality is something fashioned by natural selection. That doesn’t diminish its usefulness, or its comfort

Ruse has just written a new book on science and spirituality, which I critiqued, and seeing this essay, I am glad that I did. As neither a theist or atheist (it is a silly debate using that word ‘god’), I think the title of Ruse’s piece is wrong. We an agree, or not, that morality involves ‘god’, but we must demand proof better than what is given that natural selection produeces morality. Where on earth is the evidence for this? There is none. And please don’t cite the work of Hamilton which is a mathematical finesses concocting in his mathematical imagination.

We can’t even define morality, let alone explain how it evolved. Morality is NOT a mechanical process, and involves the reality of the human ‘will’ in some sense, and here a dogma as stupid as that as Darwinian is not even in the right ball park.

People who believe natural selection explains morality shouldn’t be writing accomodationist books. They are worthless and toxic.
