The Axial Age and evolution
Chapter five of WHEE: The question of ‘evolution’ is bound up in the issues of the Axial Age, itself a moment in the macroevolutionary sequence of civilization. Any New Ager who starts using the term ‘evolution’ for a spiritual path should see the awesome scale involved: actions of global scope over tens of millennia.
Best find another word. The term ‘evolution’ in this context refers to the sequential logic of transitions visible in the ‘eonic sequence’ and that is way beyond the efforts of individuals.
There is an irony here: the ‘evolution’ seen in macro eonic effect, produced a series of religions, for better or for worse, and we are hardpressed to make sense of what happened, or to forestall the corruption of innovations of the Axial period.
