1848: End of Eonic Sequence?
WHEE, starting with this section, has a fair amount of material on Marx and the post-liberal left, and some judicious critiques next to some over-generous explications.
The old left of the Marx/Engels years never truly got its act together, but after the revolutions of 1848 Marx/Engels did change their tactics to produce a vigorous success in the politics of the socialist/labor movements of the whole modern era. The current left cannot grasp that period because it is fixated on Lenin and the anomalous Russian Revolution which massacred the idealistic left socialists. So what are we talking about. The ultimate responsibility lies with Marx whose obsessive power domination neuroses drove him to create an ideology that the left can’t see through or repair/correct. Why not just leave it behind. What is needed is more of what worked, and that was created from the right: the Social Democratic starting point that might lead ultimately to real socialism, thence communism.
Part of the problem is the way that Marx rejected basic liberalism in the name of countering market ideology. That was the strategy that led to the Lenins. What is needed is a democratic/liberal/socialist mix that is viable and backed up the power of labor in revolt. The fetish of Marx the Genius is delaying the needed objective critique of the outcome of 1848 as a whole, whose legacy is now unraveling in the onslaught of the globalization pirates able to bypass the ealier successes based on nationalist politics (social democracies).
