Chopra’s ‘conscious’ evolution, and the Axial Age???
The progressions of the eonic effect are confusingly caught (in our own minds) between the mechanical and something beyond that. The term ‘conscious’ is never allowed in the discussion, but the process seen as ‘evolution’ is clearly beyond ordinary mechanical categories. The dangers of such speculations are avoided by focussing on the chronicle of historical dynamics seen in action, keeping the descriptive well away from the theoretical.
The dangers of Chopra’s use of the term ‘conscious’ can be seen in the Old Testament depiction of Israelite history in theistic language, a ‘conscious something’ was driving history: instand error.
We see the data in the context of the eonic effect, thence the Axial Age, as ‘evolutionary’ but mysterious.

I have been using the phrase conscious evolution and wrote a book by this title in 1998 (New World Library) to describe the fact that evolution itself is becoming conscious of itself through human intelligence. Evolution has been evolving without conscious choice of the species involved. OHowever now we, the human species are conscious that we are affecting our own evolution by everything we do, and must become causal and conscious choosers of the direction for survival and thrival and eventually evolutionary transformation and newness. As a student of Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, Teilhard de Chardin, Sri Aurobindo and many more. I believe that conscious evolution is really the evolution of evolution itself and marks the next epoch in cosmogenesis on planet Earth. Also the evolutionary process is experienced subjectively as our own heart’s desire to be more, do more, know more, etc. The universe always “wants more,” as Brian Swimme puts it. We are the universe in person. We are the face of evolution. We are in a crises that requires our conscious evolution or leads to devolution and greater chaos. This is great evolutionary driver and wake up call for humanity to grow up. My view does not deal directly with the nature of “consciousness” itself in the mystical tradition, as fundamental to evolution beyond the process of chance and necessity. However the concepts of implicate order, fractal patterns, morphogenetic fields, quantum entanglement, etc., lead toward a deeper understanding of the amazing nature of reality itself. The two extremes of reductionism and creationism are passe given the mystery of evolution from No thing at all to everything that was, is and will be. Warm regards to all, Barbara Marx Hubbard.

The perspective of ‘conscious evolution’ is one that I find interesting, but can’t quite confirm, but I think that in some form it is the potential answer to some of the mysteries of evolution. But I can”t quite close the deal here, since I have an insight of my own into evolution, and it can’t be put into either Darwinian or New Age categories. But the idea of ‘conscious evolution’ remains of interest. Let me note again that, as in the previous post, the term ‘conscious’ is not always clear. We listed the four states, sleep, consciousness, self-consciousness, enlighenment. But in many cases people use the terminology differently, using the term ‘conscious’ for self-consciousness. That’s not surprising since the ‘mechanical state 2′ doesn’t really seem like consciousness at all. I cannot endorse these New Age views of evolution, but I can’t reject them either, and anyone who can explain the early evolution of man is welcome to try with the rubrics they can muster.
