More on Occupy darwinism

Posted in General at 1:05 pm by nemo

Occupy Darwinism: http://darwiniana.com/2011/10/29/occupy-darwinism/

The left needs a new perspective on modernity, science, evolution, religion, and much more. That is an impossible task, but the attempt must be made.
We have tried here to debunk the ideology of Darwinism, and its shotgun marriage with economic ideology, with a warning that if you call something science, people will act on that basis: the myth that economic competition, with the rich as the evolutionary winners and the poor as the evolutionary losers, has produced the bashing of the welfare state, renewed class war, and the rest of it, down to the Wall Street hybris in motion of Social Darwinist sabotage of the economy.
Hard to believe, but the whole theory of Darwin here is bilge. In fact, it is an impostor created for just this kind of economic boondoogle.
The simple answer is that this theory is false, and springs, not just from the views of Hebert Spencer, often used to ‘save’ Darwin, but from the Man himself, Darwin and his theory (which may have been Wallace’s theory).
It is important to see that the problem is with the theory of natural selection, one that, taken as an abstraction, tends to suggest a course of action to those who wish to apply biological reasoning to social conflict. It is all hogwash. The theory of natural selection has a complicated basis in the false reasoning of scientists, but in the end it is a strange case of very smart people becoming very stupid in the pursuit of scientism. Look at the strange allergy to altruism in this sector of science, and the attempt to derive a substitute mechanization
in the tricky-dick mathematics of population genetics, a tactic that silences most critics, forced to say ‘duh’ confronted with the math, apparently hard science. The reality that a stage of higher muddle far far away from real science escapes the ‘science groupies’. The sad fact is that a pecular brand of capitalist idee fixe, at work since Adam Smith (and before, as in the fable of the bees, Mandeville), has done a master override on biological theory and the result is a world-historical screw-up that will some day soon sink the Titanic of Big Science. Not the same as ‘science’, which, as yet, has no theory of evolution that is really workable.

I think the OWS, and/or a larger group around it in the sense of philosopy/theory/social ideology, should take on Darwinism to attack Social Darwinism at its roots, and be done with the fancy footwork that has ‘saved the paradigm’ by blaming Herbert Spencer. The problem is with the pseudo-science of natural selection. Time to be done with it.
There is a simple solution to the public understanding of evolution. Read any book on human evolution: they actually follow it in practice, usually, staying well away, most of the time, from natural selection preaching, because they know all too well they can’t show its reality in human evolution. Frequently, discussion does in fact veer off into Darwin’s thinking, but many writers are cagey to simple depict the chronicle of human evolution as a set of facts about the fossil record. That’s it, the exciting drama of the mystery of evolution, and of man in particular, an epic saga, whose dynamic is, as a matter of fact, still unknown to us.
Without the theory of Darwin critics of Social Darwinism can achieve a real public breakthrough here, and challenge the ideological Vampires using this theory in the background to distort economic conditions.

The study of the eonic effect (throw out the term itself, if you like) suggests that a devastating limit on evolutionary theory is the case: unless you have continuous data in real time, or, at least, at the level of centuries, the reality of high-speed ‘real’ evolution at work is invisible. Which means we haven’t the foggiest about how evolution produced the forms we see. The solution is to do what we are already doing: stick with chronicles of evolutionary fact, like historical chronicles, wary of the abuse of theory used beyond observation to create an ideology of evolution, which can in turn be applied to history as a reductive legitimation of economic or class war tactics.

The eonic effect raises the issue of speciation: it did NOT occur because a higher class of apes prevailed over a lower one. In fact, speciation was a species level macroevolutionary process that must have computed whole populations on a global scale. The primitive nonsense of Darwinian logic is thus undermined at the base, as the higher apes on Wall Street discover they are the real dodos.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2011) — There is now broad agreement on the circumstances of Ötzi’s death. Around 100 experts on mummies from nearly every single continent gathered for the “2nd Bolzano Mummy Congress” held at the European Academy of Bolzano from the 20th to the 22nd October 2011, with the aim of discussing any diseases he might have been suffering from and the events surrounding his death. From the moment of his discovery 20 years ago, Ötzi — the 5,000-year-old glacier mummy — has been puzzling the scientific research community, though little by little he is also revealing many of his secrets.

Programming Cells to Home in On Specific Tissues May Enable More Effective Cell-Based Therapies
ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2011) — Stem cell therapies hold enormous potential to address some of the most tragic illnesses, diseases, and tissue defects world-wide. However, the inability to target cells to tissues of interest poses a significant barrier to effective cell therapy. To address this hurdle, researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) have developed a platform approach to chemically incorporate homing receptors onto the surface of cells. This simple approach has the potential to improve the efficacy of many types of cell therapies by increasing the concentrations of cells at target locations in the body.

A remarkable shift in mass public opinion is occurring right before our eyes. It does not happen often. Normally, only when there is a severe breakdown in public confidence about the future.
Now is such a time.

Millions are demanding clear explanations for the economic turmoil surrounding their lives and rejecting en masse standard platitudes from an increasingly discredited political establishment.

Fox-News pundits, Heritage Foundation business scholars, glib right-wing loud mouths and two-faced politicians from both major parties have been exposed as stand-in ventriloquists for the wealthy – shockingly, all in a few short weeks.

It all began with only a few hundred protestors camped out on Wall Street challenging conceited notions of the one percent.

Through it all, the Occupy Movement is discovering what my generation learned during the civil rights, antiwar, feminist and gay rights struggles begun some 65 years ago – the ideas of the rich and powerful just don’t stand up.

NEW YORK CITY—Jon Friesen, 27, tall and lanky with a long, dirty-blond ponytail, a purple scarf and an old green fleece, is sitting on concrete at the edge of Zuccotti Park leading a coordination meeting, a gathering that takes place every morning with representatives of each of Occupy Wall Street’s roughly 40 working groups.

“Our conversation is about what it means to be a movement and what it means to be an organization,” he says to the circle. A heated discussion follows, including a debate over whether the movement should make specific demands.

Confusion over history and religion

Posted in General at 12:10 pm by nemo

The Axial Age sections of WHEE: the question of religion in history and evolution has defeated almost all attempts at analysis. A similar statement can be made about the so-called Axial Age.
The latest confusion is that of Bellah and his new book, another useless addition, next to Karen Armstrong’s, to the subject.

The public confusion seems to go on and on, and the new atheists have added another dimension to it by trying to sweep it all aside!

Asia no religions?

Posted in General at 11:37 am by nemo

Why Doesn’t Asia Have Religion?
This article is bafflingly stupid, based on a false premise, and a roughly correct observation, not of religion, but ideological pseudo-religion as social ideology: the latter is rampant in the Occident, and has made real religion impossible for Westerners. They suffer through the hypnosis of the sterile ‘belief religions’ of the Christian/Jewish type. The assertion that Asia has no religion was perhaps intended to be cleverly ironic, and not meant seriously, but on any level it is false. How is it that Buddhism is not a religion?
In fact, the key seen in the Axial Age phenomenon shows a symmetric balance of multiple social-religious transformations, from which two world religions emerged, or rather two streams, the buddhistic, and the monotheistic. So the statement is completely off the mark. And, beyond that, we see hybrid in-betweens, in many ways superior for not being ‘religions’, e.g. Confuciansim. And in the West we see the Axial Age phenomenon of Archaic Greece, the most stupendous exemplar of them all, and free of the straight-jacket of religion.
Let us hope that history spares Asia the ‘religion’ phenonmenon of the West. As Danielou noted long ago, Western monotheism was/is a perverted degeneration of real religion, created to marshall cadres via watered down religious mythologies. As the ideology of the Roman empire (in the endgame) Xtianity is transparent in that regard.

Repost: Occupy darwinism

Posted in General at 11:23 am by nemo

Climbing Mt. Improbable

Any radical initiative exposing Wall Street, and moving toward a new left in general, needs to get past the Social Darwinist ideology that is the mainstay of the attack on the middle and other classes. There are two components to this: the ‘liberal’ Darwinist science groups who use Darwinism to serve what they call a ‘secular’ agenda, viz. the new atheism, et al. The latter are excellent cover for the former, and are totally confusing the issue.
Darwinism is one of the indispensable props of the ‘greed is good’ ideology that is tearing the American and other societies to pieces. Deprived of its science fiction fantasy of natural selection, the challenge to economic ideology can begin from a new understanding.
No social movement on the left should be crippled by Darwinian ideology, from now on. OWS deserves to be something more than the usual laughingstock on this issue, mouthing the Darwinian cliches from the secular humanist dupes. Secular humanism would be a great vehicle for a new left, but it has been wrecked by the idiocy of much of its agenda, so a new perspective is needed. Whatever the case with that, the issue of Darwinism is simple: it is bad science. And the attempts to use that as grounds for some religious agenda is also bad science.
All that is needed is to accept the reality of factual evolution and its visible chronicle in deep time. The theory of Darwin, natural selection, is an ideological add-on that makes the promotion of various ideologies seem rigorous. That can be dropped, and the result is not some concession to right wing design arguments, but simply better science. For the left to stand up for real science here, beyond the abuse of evolutionism to promote economic ideology, would be an immense contribution.
It requires, not arguing with the rightwing Intelligent Design people, who can be bypassed, but confronting the so-called liberal Darwinists who are creating a science monopoly out of bad science, and using that to promote, among other things, Dawkins-style atheism, etc…
I have no stance on the atheism question, as such, but the attempt to use evolution to legitimate atheism is false from the word go. So a challenge to the Darwin groupies here, who are clogging the liberal/left with Darwinian fanaticism, are true laughingstocks: the right must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Let me emphasize that the religious red herring is irrelevant here. It is a question of demanding real science from scientists, and to stop the Big Science bulwark of the economic darwinism that is wrecking the achievements of a whole century. The darwinism here is cleverly disguised by indirection, but the behind the scenes use of this ideology, is rampant, and ruthless. The use of it, unspoken, to trash the middle and working classes has started to take off in the past decade, and it is sustained, behind a grossly ridiculous and hypocritical conservative ID movement, by the claims for science by Darwinists, claims that have been exposed over and over again.

In the end the religious issue won’t go away. However, I don’t think debates over theism/atheism after the fashion of the current new atheist milieu are of any value for anyone. Who cares? god, no god, it’s all bullshit in the useless formats on both sides. A real discussion here seems hopeless to expect. Atheist humanism is a poor substitute for religious idiocy. Both have failed, and it is important for the left to not go down with the new the new atheist ship. The only intelligent stance on the left is a dynamic agnosticism that can dialectically explore all sides and one that can embrace a public of diverse views in a single party.
Let me hasten to add that religious confusion, as the left always claimed, can be a force for exploitation. I think the left has a job to expose the exploitation of culture via religion.
But the effort to do that since the era of Feuerbach has failed. So drop it and move on. It is not viable to let eitehr religious traditionalists or atheist humanists coopt the left.
This issue requires additional commentary at some other point. The issue we started with is that of Darwinism: it is a bogus theory, and its ideology has infected science, and the old left.
A new left must challenge Big Science on science grounds, bypassing the atheism/theism quagmire, to make itself intelligent on the rampant behind the scenes use of Darwinism to prop the capitalist class struggle, horsewhip the ‘lower classes’ and make the virtues of altruism look like pseudo-ethical illusions of natural selection.
It is time a new left stood up to this bullshit scientism, bad economics, and Darwinian groupie culture. Whether that follows a religious or atheist humanist path remains open. Since both of the latter are problematical, the way to the future remains open.

The reason for the link to WHEE is to suggest that while we are ignorant, beyond the surface perception of its reality, of how evolution really works, world history itself might be able to give us a hint. In any case we must stop the false application of darwinism to historical analysis.

Pinker thesis

Posted in General at 11:14 am by nemo

http://www.uncommondescent.com/culture/it%e2%80%99s-hard-to-understand-why-anyone-takes-steven-pinker-seriously/
Pinker’s thesis is indeed a bit odd, but the jury is still out. The evidence of the twentieth century is decisively against Pinker. And his Darwinism is sure to confuse his analysis.

So, if we consider the eonic effect, we can make cautious observations about progress, if not ‘moral’ progress, which is altogether more complex, and unlikely. Yet even with the latter we can set up a deliberate expectation, to see how the future comes out.
Note this point: the jury is still out. We need more than the five thousand years of civilization since Egypt/Sumer.
In terms of the eonic effect, we see dramatic improvements, then too often frittered away as the system advances, then moves backwards. That effect is part of the confusion of modernity, which is undergoing a retrograde postmodern chaotification.
But the eonic effect shows clear jumps in moral action: the best example is the achievement, at long last, of general abolition of slavery. That’s a real advance.
The question of violence then is not answerable in the current time frame. We need to be able to look back on much more historical evolution.

Unintelligent Design and Eternal Life

The notion of imperfect design is a most imperfect argument. It works for the notion of an omnipotent creator, perhaps, but in a more realistic design argument (and I don’t promote design, or intelligent design arguments myself) the design can be tested against reality in a two level process of macroevolution and microevolution. That different approach should give Darwinists pause.

I have come to the conclusion that Big Brother’s subjects in George Orwell’s 1984 are better informed than Americans.

http://www.counterpunch.org/2011/10/28/living-in-a-delusional-world/

Americans have no idea why they have been at war in the Middle East, Asia and Africa for a decade. They don’t realize that their liberties have been supplanted by a Gestapo Police State. Few understand that hard economic times are here to stay.

On October 27, 2011, the US government announced some routine economic statistics, and the president of the European Council announced a new approach to the Greek sovereign debt crisis. The result of these funny numbers and mere words sent the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index to its largest monthly rally since 1974, erasing its 2011 yearly loss. The euro rose, putting the European currency again 40% above its initial parity with the US dollar when the euro was introduced.

On National Public Radio a half-wit analyst declared, emphatically, that the latest US government statistics proved that the recovery was in place and that there was no danger whatsoever of a double-dip recession. And half-brain economists predicted a better tomorrow.
