The indications of the Axial Age
Axial Age chapter of WHEE: the question of the Axial Age has been so confused that noone can manage it anymore. The latest muddle is the new book by Bellah. But despite the confusion, you can see that the question of ‘spiritual evolution’, historical dynamics, and finally of ‘evolution’ as such are clarified by that phenomenon, if we can understand it. But the problem (not actually a problem) is ‘sacred’ and ‘secular’ aren’t distinct, and the emergence of religion and civilization occurs in tandem, in parallel, in multiple versions that blend into each other.
