The fate of capitalism

Posted in General at 1:33 pm by nemo

http://darwiniana.com/2011/11/30/ows-and-capitalism/

This perspective on the OWS and capitalism is useful, but surely requires a caution. This may well be correct: the center of gravity of the movement, as noted here several times, hovers closer to ‘social democratic activism’ than to socialism. But let me note at once that this situation, echoing the Thirties, and the FDR mood, requires, as the Thirties did, a dialectical howler in the wings to drive the middle: the Communists were very powerful and a crucial component in the success, ironically, of the New Deal. Without that far left, the elites are not afraid of simple protest. Like Zuccoti Park, they will laugh in your face, and proceed toward destruction of protest.
So the OWS should be wary here: they must create their own ‘dialectical complement’, which could take the form of simple debate the future of capitalism in the context of ecological disaster and climage warming. The question of capitalism has to remain open. The social democratic route speaks for itself: it has done a lot of good, but ended in collapse, as socialists predicted. Then again, if we look at the social democratic capitalism in a country like Germany or the Scandinavian countries we see a potential that tempts even a socialist to the general compromise the OWS is being led to by the coopting forces trying to finish them off. I think, however, this kind of ‘Scandinavian’ legacy is a real option for the American system, but rethought and readapted to circumstance. But I fear this system is so hard-wired now by troglodytes who are degenerated social darwinists that to consider compromise will backfire. So we must begin to qualify the term ‘capitalism’.
I don’t speak for the OWS, but I will speak for myself: I think we are reaching the end of the line for ‘capitalism’ as we know it now. We should at the very least out-FDR the legacy of FDR to create a new socialist/capitalist hybrid.

Best of luck. The American public has been reduced to a kind of Ayn Rand idiocy from which there seems no recovery. There the OWS would do itself and the public a disservice with facile compromise.

Time is running out, and the reign of ‘capitalism as usual’ is doomed. That’s not the end of capitalism, necessarily. But the prospect of a rightwing still unable to face the reality of ecological disaster makes it necessary to consider the harsh route beyond the capitalist system now dominant. The point of the social democrtatic option was that if you are intelligent about capitalism and its limits, it can be viable. But if we look at the American right now, we have to wonder. These people are almost insane monomaniacs, and the irony is that capitalism itself can’t function in the hands of the demented.

OWS and capitalism

Desipite the value and interest of this article, I am wary of anyone claiming anything about the views of the OWS: they didn’t interview a host of people who, in fact, would be critical of capitalism. And the essence of this movement is more a kind of question, than a set of opinions.

In any case, we can take this two ways: the conclusion demands, for some, educational efforts by socialists to clarify the clear latency of anti-capitalism in the otherwise still compliant OWS. There are multiple perspective of this type.

Pinker pigeonholed long ago by Gould

Posted in General at 12:59 pm by nemo

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/29/science/human-natures-pathologist.html?_r=2&src=dayp&pagewanted=all

As a public intellectual, Dr. Pinker has engaged in a series of high-profile debates about evolutionary psychology. In 1997, the Harvard paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould accused him and other evolutionary psychologists of seeing fine-tuned adaptations in every facet of human existence.

Evolutionary psychology, Dr. Gould wrote, “could be quite useful if proponents would trade their propensity for cultism and ultra-Darwinian fealty for a healthy dose of modesty.”

This is pretty sad: Gould said it all quite a while back, but Pinker still plugs along with this mental fetish of evo-psych. It is a kind negative feedback loop of stupid/smart people who get hardwired with Darwinism and use all their smarts to amplify error. And the stupid/smart are very confusing to stupid people, but since they make good propagandists for the Paradigm, their negative feedback loop gets reinforced.

Since the problem once revolved around the nature of language, let me reiterate my view that the evolution of language is insuperable for Darwinism, as Noam Chomsky seems to have realized, and yet we are decades past this realization imprisoned by the garbage of the stupid-smart.

Futile debates using undefined term ‘religion’

Posted in General at 12:48 pm by nemo

Would the world be better without religion?: the debate

This debate, as we have pointed out here dozens of times, is futile in the way it cites the term ‘religion’. Xttians do it to make a false equation of Xtianity with all religion, and atheists do it to attack all relgions by attacking the faults of Xtianity.

But you can’t debate such complex questions this way. However, the context of debate, on both sides, is a precious ‘celebrity asshole front’ exposure situation, so the stereotyped contest is highly prized, apparently, by this set of antagonists.

And there is a danger of losing by exhaustion here: the endless repetition, total refusal to consider outsiders, could produce results harmful to general culture. Then again, both sides are so brain-dead they will neutralize each other.

Let me repeat: attacking relgion in general without defining it is destructive and confuses the issue.

It may be that we are moving past ‘religion’ in the sense of ‘Axial Age religions’ as the forms of religion, and the category of ‘religion’ itself undergo transformation.

Pinker and evo-psych

Posted in General at 12:27 pm by nemo

Pinker and evo-psych

The question of evolutionary psychology is not complicated: it is simply Darwinism in strong form, and as fallacious as that foundation. The problem is simple: if you are forced to fall back on natural selection to explain what it can’t explain the results are ‘tosh’.

War on Thanksgiving?

Many religious believers and atheists alike express regret at the crass materialism shown this time of year, when Thanksgiving now represents the prelude to a shopping spree for Christmas presents on “Black Friday.” I gained an appalling insight watching television on the Saturday after “Black Friday.” First I saw frenzied crowds of Egyptian protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, risking their lives to demand freedom. Then I saw frenzied crowds of American shoppers, trying to push others aside to save a few dollars on sale merchandise. Though their causes were significantly different, the crowds looked the same. This is not a form of American “exceptionalism” to be proud of.

In recent years we were subjected to a media-manufactured “War on Christmas,” when pundits decry those who say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” This year breaks new ground, because we just had a manufactured “War on Thanksgiving,” allegedly started by our commander-in-chief. President Obama gave a three-minute Thanksgiving Day speech without the word “God” in it. Here is a portion of what he said:

“We’re especially grateful for the men and women who defend our country overseas. To all the service members eating Thanksgiving dinner far from your families: the American people are thinking of you today. And when you come home, we intend to make sure that we serve you as well as you’re serving America. We’re also grateful for the Americans who are taking time out of their holiday to serve in soup kitchens and shelters, making sure their neighbors have a hot meal and a place to stay. This sense of mutual responsibility – the idea that I am my brother’s keeper; that I am my sister’s keeper – has always been a part of what makes our country special. And it’s one of the reasons the Thanksgiving tradition has endured.”

Dawkins’ flea infestation

Posted in General at 12:18 pm by nemo

In the new hard-hitting book, The Godless Delusion, apologetics experts Patrick Madrid and Kenneth Hensley help Christians wake up to the crisis of godlessness, alerting them to the imperative need for taking seriously atheism’s challenge, while learning how to effectively engage in today’s atheistic debate. With a systematic and comprehensive approach, Madrid and Hensley make plain the truth of God’s existence and the foolishness of the atheist-naturalist worldview.

Most books that take on the current spate of atheists look at the inner contradictions in their arguments—and there are many. But Patrick Madrid and Kenneth Hensley try another, and ultimately more fruitful approach.

Howard Kainz on critics of Darwinism

Posted in General at 12:16 pm by nemo

http://www.evolutionnews.org/2011/11/at_first_things053571.html

In “Intelligent Design: Atheists to the Rescue,” Marquette University philosopher Howard Kainz writes about three atheist authors who’ve written books either defending intelligent design or dismantling Darwinian theory. The piece is a good comeback to the standard Darwinist talking point that only religious fanatics doubt Darwin or sympathize with ID.

Comments Professor Kainz:

[Bradley] Monton’s insistence that we should search for the truth, and not restrict our search to naturalistic scientific methods, is refreshing. And the arguments of [Jerry] Fodor and [Massimo] Piattelli-Palmarini, although they hold no brief for ID theory, in their criticism of “natural selection,” unintentionally bring out examples that certainly sound like, well, design.

Transplanted Cells Repair the Brain in Obese Mice

Transplanted Cells Repair the Brain in Obese MiceScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2011) — Without neurons reacting to the blood leptin level, the brain does not control the feeling of hunger and fullness. This type of genetic defects results in severe obesity in humans and animals. Scientists from Harvard University (HU), Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Nencki Institute) in Warsaw have demonstrated in their experiments on mice that it is possible to restore brain functions by transplantation of small numbers of new neurons into the damaged area of the brain.

Simone Pika from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology and Thomas Bugnyar from the University of Vienna, however, now provide the first evidence that ravens (Corvus corax) also use so called deictic gestures in order to test the interest of a potential partner or to strengthen an already existing bond.

Revolution (s) repost and some comments

Posted in General at 2:27 pm by nemo

I am not sure that I should repost this again, but will because, judging from the stats (breaking all records even before the end of the month), it hits a nerve. I will be self-critical and caution against facile revolutionary thinking: the solution is to proceed indirectly, via non-revolution. It will be clear soon enough what the current estab is up to.
But then, the situation is getting desperate, and the appearance of the OWS like an apparition should be a warning that the future will take its own course, and so will the revolutionary tide. And it won’t be revolution, it will be gangs of thugs taking over the lifeboats. So be ready with a revolution, by starting with a non-revolution: Occupy Congress.
So it is good to raise, at the minimum, the theme of (virtual) revolution to have a way of thinking ready in the wings.
The OWS is a mystery, and its future, whatever it is, will be at the least a suggestion to a future movement, if this one is suppressed. Revolution talk is one thing, but the OWS should without delay try to create a political election initiative, to see what is possible.

http://darwiniana.com/2011/11/27/french-revolution-as-model-vs-bolshevik-revolution/

Let me repeat that I am a parallel traveller to the OWS, not even a fellow traveller, or a spokesman, and for this reason pursue angles that may be out of tune, or too radical, for those who wish this movement to find concrete political realizations. The reason for my reserve is that I wouldn’t trust myself to pontificate to such a group.

The question of the French Revolution is outlandish, and meant to be: history never repeats itself, and that revolution veered off into many failed episodes. My point is that the beginning resembles the current situation, and that of the Russian, pre-Bolshevik revolution. And there is no reason to imitate the succession: the point is that the beginning of anything is a potential, then the realization is something else. Still, I am wrong, in a way. As any old-fashioned leftist would note: the ‘democratic’ revolutions were won, but still there was a problem: socialism should redo the result. OK, but that became the Leninist tyranny that took that sequencing of stages as an excuse for a new form of dictatorship. Still, the left can’t figure out this was a failure.
But I think that the current situation is so far from democracy now that the format is almost ‘democratic revolution’ all over again. A true democracy must be implicitly socialist if it is going to limit the tyranny of markets and bankers. So the French, and, better, the American Revolution remain as potentials in the background, all of this perhaps far from the OWS dynamics. But I think that if a government is close to a criminal mafia trying to work inside the system is going to fail, step one. I don’t know, any my analog is a tossed up paper airplane, food for thought.

It is not really clear at all what we are dealing with in the Arab Spring and OWS, and comparisons to past revolutions may be a disservice to creative action. But it might be helpful to see that a Leninist style revoluton is a chimera now, and my remarks might remind leftists that you must tear up your notes and start from scratch. That work, which is still undone, should have been done a decade ago. Maybe you have to have a concrete situation to reckon with the unknowns, and produce anything practical. It is simply my observation that Marxism is both a complete set of answers, and totally useless at this point. You would spend ten years arguing the obvious: Marx/Engels were not Leninists and actually created a form of social democracy.
Still, the old left could help here, if they could be more intelligent about their history. The OWS can’t proceed very far without some kind of guiding thought. Who can provide it?

I suggested something else here a few days ago: the American system is a colonial imperialism all over again. In the global context of OWS a colonial revolt seems the right move. And, remember, some of the founding fathers themselves enjoined future revolutions, a unique legacy. Your move.
