I have never advocated not voting for Obama, but Bill Clinton, Nation Mag, and Bob Reich almost popped me out of endorsement mode. I could recover but….

The first link is to my take on Clinton, a polished devil, and Obama as neoliberal apprentice: to vote for these people might be dangerous: what will they unleash in the name of budget repair??? These people are very irritating when they talk about jobs. The new job world is something the unemployed are starting to discover. And it is not pretty. It is something that has always existed in the American economy, but its scale is expanding, as tens of millions lose their place in the system. Those who hype forth on jobs are also forgetting the reality, deliberately. Which is that jobs will not be there for tens of millions, from now on.

I have a sad story that is relevant to the times: an old friend from Peace Corps days, who recently reached retirement age, at which point he started getting $334 a month in social security based on two years work in the Peace Corps in the sixties, a year in a hospital an a psychiatric orderly after that, and three years driving a cab in New York, at which point his hack license was stolen, and, though he could have gone to the police, got into a huff and starting roaming the country. Despite experience, getting a job as a teacher failed. So much for peace corp veterans. It was devastating, for having served his country, to have lost any chance of a good job (liberal arts, two year gap, you do the interview math), personal characteristics not helpful, to be sure. You can harangue such people to ‘get a job’, but the reality is that after a few years out of the highwage circuit, with a liberal arts degree, you are essentially treated sans resume an illiterate, unemployable, and, ‘please get lost’. Once that happens the game is over. Many, but still minority, can wangle something, but there are millions out there in these conditions of capitalist slow death.
In his roaming, he recounts, he did many net years of temp work between railroad hops, in the numberless labor pools from Texas to Seattle, to say nothing of ag work. In thirty five years of such so-called work, the IRS computers flagged a grand total of one day’s W2 wages. The vast majority of those labor pools never report any income from day work, or take the money and destroy the records a few years later.
You had best watch your mouth for even expressing sympathy for such people: you have committed them to a system of mass murder in the name of capitalism. Your best option, as you know very well, is to never meet up with such people. It is like meeting people you pushed out of a lifeboat. Fake sympathy isn’t good enough. A good beginning to non-conversation might be ‘stare down my gun barrel’.
So a vote for Obama, outrageously, and not just Romney, may put that pitiful $334 at risk. Beyond belief. Could Obama be trusted at this point? I can only say that, while I don’t advocate not voting, I don’t want to have made you vote for someone who wants to take away the SS for the millions of pitiful wretches out there. Your move. Don’t blame me. Mum’s the word.
I think Robert Reich doesn’t deserve the firing squad here, and does decent work as a bourgeois economist with marginalist tendencies, but on the jobs issues his hopeful blather gets tedious.
