I think the new atheists fail to see themselves in action. This debate between old and atheism is real: when I was in college, all the pressure was already there to become an atheist. I read many books of Russell, Nietzsche, and the rest of it. But even then the pressure to ‘believe’ as an atheist in a cult was absent. I would never have felt any contradiction to have at once embraced theism and atheism in different weeks, and, over time, the atheist position simply follows (naive) theism in falling by the wayside.
Who the hell wants to associate with a fussy club of ‘new atheist’ fanatics enforcing discipline on a whole world view of idiotic positions, like the denial of buddhist enlightenment (what to say of the prejudice against fellow atheist buddhists), and the Dawkins ‘group leader’ BS from a smooth-voiced huckster who has made a bundle from pied piper business practice (the science, he must know, is harebrained)… ETC…
Result: saying goodbye to ‘atheism’.
The new atheist movement is, as I can tell, unique in its stupidity: a horde of old atheists (including, amazingly, Paul Kurtz!!!) are de facto heretics, and ostracized by the new style of doctrinal conformity demanded of adherents. \\
You know what? Fuck you, goodbye.
And, of course, the old religionists would be delighted to the new and old atheists in a new religious war.
