You Don’t Watch HBO’s ‘Enlightened’ Religiously? Where Have You Been?
America is being treated to a brilliant satire of the links between the New Age self-actualization movement and the worker hell of corporate America.
I haven’t watched this TV series, so I am not clear what is going on here, but I remain suspicious of attempts to lambast the New Age Movement: the problem here is that neoliberal capitalism and commercialization has gobbled up that movement, leaving nothing in the end. These critiques end up ridiculing the search for enlightenment, in an indirect swipe at religion in general. I can’t tell whether this is fair here or not. I think that American culture is likely to turn the core Buddhism that has taken root here into a complete parody, with the blame put on Buddhism. And the attempt to nearly outlaw the reality of ‘enlightenemnt’ by recent pseudo-buddhist groups is a part of this campaign to trivialize this ancient legacy.
