The issue of design haunts Darwinism. In a way, they are lucky in their opponents who abuse design arguments for theological purposes. But the reality is that ‘design’ threatens to undo the Darwinian mindset, which is so highly illogical that it almost invites design counterarguments.
As I noted today, WHEE doesn’t propose design arguments, but it is almost too fair to the anti-design argument.
The fact is that the ‘design’ (not the theological brand) in world history is extraordinary. So much so that we are left perplexed. The irony is that theological design arguments don’t really work. The Old Testament is a text about a design argument in history, but it gets it wrong, no? That is the trap. Design arguments can lead in a quagmire. The strategy of WHEE is simple systems modeling, and a neutral stance on design, which isn’t even mentioned. But a close look at the ‘macro effect’ shows a clear form of design, within nature, to be sure. Thus the evidence of the Axial Age confounds both sides, religious and scientific…
