Before the new atheists, the historical materialists

Much of the confusion over religion arose in the early nineteenth century after the fad of Hegel passed, to be replaced with a positivistic scientism that has confused almost all the issues it has touched, including ‘evolution’. I think that the historical materialism of the early Marx was an example of this extreme reaction to Hegel with a result that has hampered the left ever since. I think that a broader view of philosophy could help to make the issues of marxism into a populist activism. Instead we have dead hand of the oldest brand of scientism, and this is such a turn off now that it is hard for people to think clearly about social change and radical action.
