Marcuse redux

December 5th, 2014 · No Comments

In writing Last and First Men I was aware of how many in the Marx tradition were left out, Marcuse being a good example. But maybe that was right, to start. The issues of Marxuse and Luckacs and many others need a new foundation for a new post-marxism: at that point these figures will come roaring back. Marcuse is a very acute student of Hegel, also, not only Zizek.
This article is full of good stuff (Aronson) such as this:

He spoke to a deep sense of alienation. “The pure form of servitude,” he wrote, is “to exist as an instrument, as a thing. And this mode of existence is not abrogated if the thing is animated and chooses its material and intellectual food, if it does not feel its being-a-thing, if it is a pretty, clean, mobile thing.” Moreover, “Free election of masters does not abolish the masters or the slaves.”
