One of the great confusions spread by the new atheists (they weren’t the first) is to try and make ‘atheism’ a defining characteristic of secularism. That is outrageous and a sign of a poorly thought out initiative. Consider the vast dialectic in thought in modernity, and the place of the Reformation in that. To try and sweep away all that and make atheism the defining issue of modernity will sink modernity itself.
In general trying to restrict the definition of modernity to a defining atheism is a tremendous narrow and biased strategy. There dozens of philosophic to religious initiatives all secular that mediate the spectrum of god concepts. To let that universe of discourse become decimated by the likes of Dawkins and Harris would drive out the concept of modernity itself.
