I was an immediate fan of the original ‘limits to growth’ analysis when it came out, and have spent the last forty years waiting for the critics of that work to be proven wrong. And this wasn’t much of an achievement on my part: the analysis was a no-brainer from the start, with a large following slowly but surely silenced. There was something transparent about the original research and yet it was subject to an almost unbelievable amount of mostly brazen dishonesty. The original debate has a huge following, so the tactics of suppression and opinion manipulation are the villains here.
But our findings should sound an alarm bell. It seems unlikely that the quest for ever-increasing growth can continue unchecked to 2100 without causing serious negative effects – and those effects might come sooner than we think.
It may be too late to convince the world’s politicians and wealthy elites to chart a different course. So to the rest of us, maybe it’s time to think about how we protect ourselves as we head into an uncertain future.
If it too late to convince these elites then a revolutionary challenge toward a new postcapitalist system becomes critical.
