Atheism and sociology

I think the theism/atheism debate is a distraction. Religion is not going away, but like a wave retreating to restart, and, ironically, atheists are creating a blank slate. The issues of theism/atheism have turned incoherent and don’t have the simplicity they once seemed to have. And in the passage westerners are realizing that with buddhism, the ‘god’ question never arises.
The issues of divinity encounter, the atheist, but the philosopher, like Kant, who, with a ‘critique of reason’, challenges the metaphysics of spiritual subjects. But that was never the same as atheism. The stance of the atheist, as Kant pointed out, was just as metaphysical as the stance of theism.
I think the new atheist movement’s leaders fail to see that they have adopted a whole series of metaphysical beliefs, i.e. darwinian natural selection, that provide a very poor foundation for their novel belief set.
