Why the Future of Religion Is Bleak | Richard Dawkins Foundation
I am often surprised at the sloppiness of the new atheists. But I have also agreed to some extent, for different reasons: it is true that the Axial Age religions like Xtianity are declining. I am not sure what that means if net population increase is the case for religions like Islam.
And buddhism has expanded in the US and Western Europe. And yoga has seen an explosion globally.
But the implication of the ‘new age’ effect is the reformation, transformation, or cessation of Axial Age religions in the long run.
But what is religion? The new atheists forever make generalizations about religion without defining it.
Is the new atheism a religion. Absolutely! It is gross hypocrisy to say otherwise.
But in general the whole take of Dennett is false.
Dennet claims that religion recedes whenever human security and well-being rises…That is nonsense. People have turned away from Xtianity for many reasons, but the ‘well being’ of any human is relative. The sense of spiritual safety in Xtian believers has long been its greatest strength. The deterioration in a multitude of cases for those who exit this religion suggests a greater caution in the analysis of religion. Bullshit sociology is not able to do the job.
And the question of soul is fumbled by ‘scientists’ like Dennett: the reality of the human soul is rejected by science, a catastrophe in the long run as Iron Cage science creates the perfect robot.
There is the obvious alternate exit from religion: leave a religion to escape its conditioning and then enter ‘spirituality’ for the first time.
We are suffering exceptional bad luck in the sheer mediocrity of the new atheist mess of pottage.
The new atheists ought to be shitting in their pants that de-religionizing won’t infect millions with ‘demonic’ entities. They will end praying for help.
