We have of course demanded a new materialism and of course there is one already there. But a universal materialism of the Samkhya type is what is really needed. There is no reason to consider that the consciousness studied by neuroscience precludes the ‘materiality’ of ‘formerly thought spiritual’ later seen as material forms of higher consciousness.
But we must consider the categorical context of all forms of materialism: there are no absolutes. Hard materialism is still beset with the ‘thought world’ of its mathematical ideas, and in general the whole game is always found to contain the several opposites.
