The Jain background of Gandhi is often missed. The connection is not exactly known, at least here, but the subject changed its character with that political figure (with the New Testament brand and Tolstoy entering the picture).
Non-violence appears to have been born among Jains whose ‘fasts unto death’ and refusal to even step on insects put the subject into the realm of spiritual abstraction.
This has confused the issue. All the early modern wars of liberation and revolution were violent conflicts. We are under no obligation to submit to this Jain interpolation created by Gandhi.
