At the risk of dialectical blowout and after critiquing others’ theories we should nonetheless recommend a version of Kantian Universal History as an alternative to historical materialism. This approach impinges on theory but remains an empirical examination, based on various forms of systems analysis. It is thus a variant of simple narrative history, with chapters, epochs, instead of laws of history, with free agents instead of machines. It invokes a Kantian theme of free agency/ethical agency, and uses an idea of the ‘republic of ends’ to found socialism. The historical matrix shown resolves Kant’s classic challenge, and this brings in the issue of teleology in a way that reconciles evolutionary and historical matrices. The overall schema is useful because it includes all possible themes, ideologies, religions, and historical streams in its survey: it is not thus stuck in the routine of making the latest fad the ultimate route to the future.
