All these discussions of the secular presume we know what the term means, but in fact we don’t. That is why we have such a confused set of discussions about religion and modernity. But as we have pointed out many times, one approach is to ‘map out’ the modern transition in its depth and diversity to see beyond the secular stereotypes now current: scientism, darwinism, reductionism, atheism…etc… Secular modernity is in reality a set of resources of immense complexity and depth. The capitalist world has produced a negative version of a small portion of all that.
The challenge of modernity lies here and we can see the failure to answer a similar question in antiquity. It is almost pointless to preach the secular to Moslems given the behavior of the US. Americans are really a kind of spin off of the secular and have degenerated so rapidly that is embarrassing to even use the term ‘secular’.
