This adopts a controversial stance on the issue of the working class, or does it? The working class needs a new formulation that goes beyond the older cliches that no longer serve so well. And we need movement that stops trying to manipulate the ‘working class’, an abstraction that will defy the left’s definitions, and instead proceeds from individuals who make a commitment to a new postcapitalist society. We have redefined the question around The Universal Class, which is really the working class, but more inclusive and open to any and all segments of a general public.
The left needs a new way to define its action, and a new set of movements that build on, or ‘remember’ classic marxism, but which can define socialism/communism in a new practical praxis.
