We commented on this article several times yesterday. I think Gray deserves a plus for taking on this perspective of Harari: http://www.newstatesman.com/culture/books/2016/10/humanity-mk-ii-why-future-humanity-will-be-just-purposeless-past
His previous book is a completely stupid piece of darwinian junk, so I can’t expect much from this new book. In general the trends of modern thought are failing on the subject of human psychological. The techno-transhumanism promoted here is still more such junk. The failure of scientism to deal with human psychology, ordinary or spiritual is a notable fact of modern life. It has over time made sufis so angry they have repeatedly issued torpedoes trying to sound a warning, but the mysterious sufi world is frozen in Islamic granite and can’t seem to have an effect.
J.G.Bennett in his The Dramatic Universe produced one failed attempt to produce a type of correction, but even as a trainwreck it shows something of what is wrong with the coup d’etat of scientism, darwinism, and reductionist idiocy.
Let me hasten to add that such a speculative dimension is almost fun, if grotesque, like science fiction, and a valid exercise, but the broader failure to grasp beyond mechanical man is a worrisome impoverishment of scientism.
