The US is probably more culpable than Putin in the realm of power politics, but the real issue is that Russian should never have left communism in the way it did. Many now seem to think, and I would tend to agree or consider the point, that Gorbachev completely blew it and threw away a chance to continue the revolution in a new way. He must have had too many sit downs with Thatcher and been coaxed into idiocy with lies and propaganda. The result was a terrible plunder staged by Washington and a social collapse hard to contemplate in retrospect. What the Russians got was a swindle and far worse than what they had. In this context Putin is a symbol of the tragedy that came in the wake of the Fukuyama gangster set, and he is not an appropriate leader for a system that just might attempt to return to communism. Why on earth not? Do it right this time.
