We are in a terminal crisis of climate change: we can’t just dally until the next election, hope to fix the Democrats just in time, or allow the Trump gang to undo the little progress made. We have all the evidence of democracy betrayed and all the justification needed to stage a revolt against this situation. We need just as much a new left, with real revolutionaries, in principle, and a robust platform to realize a postcapitalist form of democracy.
This platform can unify evolutionaries and revolutionaries, with a definite sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of the former: if their time is up and their efforts are inadequate we move into revolutionary mode. Surely we have in fact reached that point. A year of Sanders, let us note, was the strongest electoral effort we have seen in almost a century but it failed, and badly. But a two track effort to start seems inevitable. But we are out of time: we need a radical open revolutionary movement that can stage of million person march on Washington to force the issues out in the open. But the current Not Our President protests are signs the evolutionary protest is already underway and a borderline revolutionary movement.
The logic of revolutions is often ironically dialectical: we have seen this with the failure of Clinton and the onset of Trump who is forcing the issue of revolution.
We cannot, we must not, let this gang of crooks coming to the fore sabotage the climate movements actions. The alternative is mass death on a terrifying scale.
