Resolutions of the ‘consciousness’ and ‘materialism’ dilemma

March 15th, 2017 · No Comments

https://aeon.co/essays/materialism-alone-cannot-explain-the-riddle-of-consciousness: once we get into the false dilemma of ‘materialism’ versus ‘consciousness’ it is hard to get out of it. But the materialism of reductionist science is clearly problematical. It may not follow that science upgrades via quantum mechanics have resolved the issues completely as yet.

We have suggested here a look at the framework of J.G. Bennett where the basic framework moves beyond the sterile ‘materialism’/’spirituality’ or ‘material/conscious’ dilemmas to a triadic or meta-dialectical framework of ‘being, function, and will’: materialism is replaced by an abstraction of ‘function’, while the unity of consciousness and materiality as aspects of being are counterpoint to the factor of will which is often confused with the question of consciousness. The scheme has a remarkable manner of bypassing stale debates over spirit/matter that haunt modern thought.
