Secularism beyond ‘god debates’ //How many American atheists are there really? – Vox

The resolution of so-called ‘secularism’ is not atheism, although that ‘ism’ might spearhead a transition or new reformation of the reformation. That said, clearing the air of the morass of false ‘god’ beliefs is an essential stage to a new era of the secular equivalent of religion. The question of ‘god’ is a kantian metaphysical quagmire and the issue of ‘faith’ (Kant’s usage was quite different) is increasingly a block to intelligent approaches to ‘spirituality’. To base ‘secularism’ on reductionist scientism is never going to work and the sluggish statistics of what is called ‘atheism’ testify to that and to the immense range of post-religious beliefs, including an immense field of New Age movements.
