Stephen J. Gould is a greatly overrated thinker whose net effect was to delay the real paradigm shift beyond darwinism. And his take on punctuated equilibrium was crippled from the start with a compromise with darwinism.

Although one has to be wary of using the term at all, a picture of what ‘punctuated equilibrium’ essentially is can be seen from the eonic effect. There is indeed a correlation with ‘revolution’, in the modern transition, but the overall phenomenon is far more complex…
