Materialism and the dialectic are useless baggage for a neo-communism: this web page neatly summarizes the whole framework of Marx’s recasting of his sources, but the whole mindset if unnecssary and subjects any praxis to endless metaphysical, yes, metaphysical debates.

The approach in WHEE is better: a loose historical outline without the red herring of causal theories, an emphasis on free agency, no dialectical muddle (although ‘dialectic’ defined as dyadic logic and debate works fine), and core ‘systems analysis’ in place of theories about hypercomplex entities. Systems analysis is neutral between materialism, idealism, causal theories, etc…
