The incomplete Reformation
August 20th, 2015 ·

The new atheism? criticism of religion is barely underway….some shock treatment ‘expostulations’ on religious issues…

The new atheism is a badly bungled job. But it will force those who must deal with legacy religions to produce something more intelligent. The problem is that secular humanism can’t even understand modernity, let alone the emergence of religion. Bad science like evolutionary psychology has confused everyone, along with the view of religion via scientism.
But religionists need to get smart. Time for theologians to look at standard religious behavior and belief and ask if it represents anything more than infantile theism. And the reality of xtianity as an ideology from the Roman Empire suggests the need to recast the whole subject. In a way the Reformation failed to complete the job, but that was one that required both more science and the type of critique of science produced by figures like Kant.
