R48G: a sacrifice for the future…

July 30th, 2017 · No Comments

The state of affairs, our contemporary situation, resembles the period onset to the Civil War. A point comes when the forked path to the future demands a strong redirection of history. Without it the future is foresclosed by the least of possibilities. In a way Trump symbolizes that diminished future, but we must no let him become the disguise for the failure of the larger system with better cosmetics. Americans are dangerous to themselves, to global civilization and to the planet.

… until all the wealth piled by the bondsman’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, …

I think the left tends to be so intimidated by the strength of current capitalism and so afraid of the legacy of stalinism that it can’t really get specific about anything.

The time to talk about the new system began in the period around 1848 and the verdict was/socialism/communism. We are still at the same spot, but afraid to even refer to what is needed. But one may demand that a new communism should specifics that can evade a stalinist outcome…
That said, there are many ways to consider the issues of communism, and we can barely use the old term. But the key concept of communism is essential because the Industrial Revolution has allowed a group of rapacious psychopaths to appropriate the commons and turn that into private property. The return of all that to the commons is essential. Whatever system we propose it must include that as a basic starting point. We have few radicals I fear, who will aim do it right.
It is worth considering the classic quote from Lincoln from the second inaugural:

Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said “the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.”

Slavery went on and on for centuries and like capitalism was given sanction as historical inevitability in practice. By the time of the Civil War (which still fumbled at the beginning) the future of civilization was at stake. Something had to prevail over slavery.

And analog to the issue of capitalism. We should start now with the time still to demand communism emerge from democracy so as to let democracy reemerge from communism.
The fatal delay in the wake of the Industrial Revolution served the hope that development by capitalism could proceed until the system was ready to move beyond that. But now we see that capitalism has achieved globalization but is now set to take back the gains of wealth for all in a system of democratic and economic equality.

We should be mindful of Lincoln’s thought: until all the wealth piled by the bondsman’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk

All the gains of the Industrial Revolution are likely to be lost, along with the liberties of the first democracies, so what was the point….The time for us to act is now while there is still something to wrest history from its eternal poverty…

The movies of Gettysberg give a good portrait, and this in its own way was close a working class army moving via serendipity into an army of liberation. The overcoming of slavery happened when these dirt farmers walked into musket fire with a high probability of death.
It is not disrespectful to cite the Civil War here: that was a war against slavery. The next will be a war not only against slavery but to save a planet from capitalist lunatics.
