The confusion over ethics has attended the left and in a way that is unfortunate because it has produced a needless prejudice against the whole legacy of socialism/communism. The exact sequence of cultural transformations here is complicated but in the wake of the Enlightenment, and figures like Kant, a down-shifted era of reductionist materialism, scientism, and darwinism flooded the field and produced a very narrow marxism that has been a mill stone around the head of the left. It is interesting that the school of Kantian ethical socialists appeared at the end of the nineteenth century to challenge the hard-core marxism crystallizing around the theories of Marx.
We have suggested a much larger tent, with a ‘dialectical’ spectrum of the whole of the early modern which stretches its bow between the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment and the Romantic movment, and much else, in an immensity of innovations that could have seeded a more robust ‘culture-creation’ mode in revolutionaries…
