Booknote: Our First Revolution: The Remarkable British Upheaval That Inspired America’s Founding Fathers
Beside books like Davidson’s tome on ‘bourgeois revolutions’ we have books such as this (I unexpectedly found a copy on my bookshelf),

a text that is breezy enough but which unwittingly exposes the contradictions at the base of modern politics: to dismiss the English Civil War as some kind of near communist aberration and to call the Glorious Revolution the first revolution requires either brazen distortion of history, or else a degree of ideological/’liberal’ mesmerization that is, well, par for the course, a frequent state of mental affairs…
We have lost the use of the terms ‘liberal’, ‘democracy’, ‘revolution’, along with ‘socialism’ and ‘communism’: the term should coexist in greater harmony and the cooptation of the English Civil War should become the basis for a rebirth of terminology that sees the reality that socialism and democracy lie in the future and must emerge together….
