A consideration of string theory suggests even physicists are having a problem with ‘theory’.

The question of history stands in the same queue as a field of mystery. The question of a science of history remains unsolved, and for a number of very good reasons. Kant has proposed a set of questions, instead, asking us to examine facts. Yet here Marx had the temerity to propose a full solution to the question on the basis historical materialism and a directional system of epochs. The idea of the free agent was banished. The theory belongs to an earlier age of marxism and we need to let it slide into history as part of the saga of socialism/communism. Behind the question of theory lies an ironic question: Marx was right and wrong: if we act as free agents to create communism we prove him right even as we prove him wrong, an amusing twist.

The question of a science of history is confounded by the question of free will or free agents. The reverse is true. The eonic effect shows an ingenious way around this confusion in the discovery of a new kind of historical pattern or dynamic of the relative degrees of freedom of free agents in the context, not causality, but a far more complex process continuous/discontinuous action.

Even if we don’t fully understand this we can roughly see that is going on and be confident that our free agency can be reconciles with an historical dynamic, which increasingly looks to have a teleological aspect.
In a way this approach both points as much to what we don’t know and disciplines us to be wary of theories and remain empirical. The eonic effect doesn’t require any belief save as rough set of categories to collate data, leaving the almost insuperable task of interpretation. The data at least offers a hint against the adoption of reductionist assumptions. In the process we encounter a rough solution to the questions raised by Kant.
There is every possibility of recasting the issues of democracy, socialism/communism in terms of an approximation of a theory that is still beyond our ken. We can also pursue economic histories on a far more realistic basis as emebbed systems in a larger context of civilization. We can escape the absence of values in a reductionist science and evaluate historical givens in terms of a larger perspective of facts and values.
Here the question of communism becomes a challenge to the chaotic, exploitative, and ecologically destructive aspects of so-called capitalism which is not a stage of history but a set of economic innovations that need to be brought into harmony with an overall social trend toward democracy.

The material of the eonic would make a very useful new paradigm

for a postmarxist upgrade, one that could easily absorb a lot of key elements of the now older legacy…It is worth noting that Marx/Engels, and really their immediate sources in French socialism, etc, are part of the drama of the eonic effect and we can see the momentum of their work is part of the almost miraculous dynamism of the period of the ‘divide’ with respect to the modern transition. But that does not fully endorse all elements of the result and we have suggested that problems with the theories of historical materialism. Marxists have become entangled in a set of theories that its critics have exposed and which cannot be fully absolved of the bolshevik calamity. The eonic perspective can take the place of the stolid histomat that has produced a brittle analysis of historical epochs and clarify the place of historical theory in the context of an immensely complex evolutionary system in world history. There the gestation of socialism/communism next to democracy is an aspect of the overall trend of the modern transition and the great ironic result is a secular equivalent of a ‘revelatory’ saga rendered in a post-theistic epoch of religions passing through the Reformation and then passing into the Feuerbachian period.
