We need to reiterate our consideration that it was a mistake to see capitalism as a stage of history: democracy, economic democracy, should have embraced a socialist framework from the start. In fact, a close look shows that the early modern attempted to do just that, from the proto-communism of Thomas Munzer to the ambiguities of the English Civil War where the birth of democracy included spasmodic attempts at economic justice. In the wake of the Restoration the definition of ‘democracy’ was to be doomed to the format all too clear in its realizations.
