The sheer complexity of the modern transition is staggering and comprises hundreds if not thousands of innovations. And that includes much in the realm of art and music. What is the nature of this transformation. Step back and read beyond this selection, the whole of chapter six in WHEE: the mystery of modernity joins the larger mystery of the eonic sequence and is clearly an aspect of a larger systematics. Seen rightly then the enlightenment is a moment in the modern transition and will ‘break’ if misinterpreted or taken in isolation. Pinker’s emphasis on capitalism is one way to goof here (I have done it multiple times myself): the larger modern transition is multitasking capitalism/socialism and we can see the way the overall effect balances opposites. Can we blame the excesses of capitalism on the philosophes?
