Historical materialism is no longer believable to the general public and in fact has lost the vast majority of its older audience. Marxism has many insights: taken a la carte without the burden of stale ideology they can enter into a new and different looking mix.
We have suggested that left can move beyond the marxist monopoly of the communist idea and adopt a different approach to the study of history:
although the pattern of the so-called ‘eonic effect’ can seem controversial its core is completely empirical. Instead of a rigid theory of history the perception of a dynamic based on an empirical pattern, used rightly, can create consensus based on the simple facts visible as we look backward.
Perhaps unfortunately the powers that be will refuse to look at any facts and enforce various ideological viewpoints.
But at least the left can free itself from their own ideology and base a praxis on a robust historical chronology that speaks for itself as a developmental process that stands beyond the economic interpretation of all phenomena…
