The concept of Marxism – 002.pdf

We have noted here repeatedly the need to recast marxism (beyond the term itself) beyond the questions of dialectical and historical materialism. These ‘isms’ are really metaphysical stances (not necessarily bad) that seem somewhat dated now. The dialectic cannot resolve the issues it invokes, and there is a confusion over dualistic dialectic and a three term or triadic form of logic. Historical materialism commits the left to convince some stubborn philosophic positions to conform to a brittle logic of the marx/engels dialogue. But it would be far better to adopt a larger domain of discourse that bypassed the useless debate over materialism and idealism. And to consider a broader humanistic psychology, one that can compete with the religious legacies of tradition and the flood of global new age spiritual psychologies that both complicate and bedevil secular humanism.
